Observational Drawing Quickstart: a 6-week class.
At the ArtWaves Town Hill Art Center
Tuesdays 6:30 to 9 PM, No class July 4th.

Want to get essential skills that will start you off right? This is the course, an intense, 6-week introduction that will help you to understand the basic drawing concepts that are central to making visual art. Clear, easy to follow instructions and basic exercises will get you on the path to making great drawings.

This course will cover the basics of drawing and will get you started off with a sound grasp of the fundamentals.
Topics include: understanding perspective and pictorial space, contour drawing and effective use of line, value and shading, composition and more…

Please bring to the first class: a 14 x 17-inch pad of drawing paper, a kneaded gum eraser, 2 Prismacolor Jet Black Ebony pencils and a pencil sharpener or single-edged razor blade.


Fundamentals of Painting

Join Rob Pollien at ArtWaves studio for an introductory series of structured oil painting exercises.  Artists of all levels of experience are welcome, although the course is recommended for artists new to oil painting or returning after a long absence.

Starting with simple value and color painting studies in oil, we will progress quickly toward more complex painting problems. Attention will be given to sound studio fundamentals and helping the students learn, grow and become comfortable with the medium.

Materials required: Titanium White, yellow ochre, permanent red violet, ultramarine blue, burnt sienna, Turpenoid or odorless solvent for brush cleaning, paper towels, nitrile (or similar) gloves. And a few No. 4 and No. 6 natural bristle flat brushes, disposable or other palettes, palette knife. Canvas Pad, 10 Sheets 14-by-18 or similar. A drawing board for your sheets of canvas may also be helpful.

Easels are provided but if you have a portable easel that you like, you are welcome to bring it. ArtWaves will supply tape, rags, paper towels, aprons.

Figure Study: Drawing into Painting Course Extended for 3 weeks, long pose

This class is going into extra innings! We’re going to tackle a drawing3-week pose giving students the opportunity to engage in figure study over longer time scale.

If you’d like to join our group of Thursday night figure painters, we have room for a couple more students. 

The cost for the 3-week add-on is $105 for ArtWaves members, $125 for non-members.

Thursday evenings, 6-9 PM at ArtWaves Town Hill Art Center.
